Lymphedema occurs when there's a build up of lymphatic fluid in the body, primarily in arms and legs due to weakened, missing or removed lymph vessels or lymph nodes. This causes swelling in the affected area. The immune system only works properly when viruses, bacteria and other harmful substances are trapped and filtered through the lymph nodes so that they're destroyed by special white blood cells called lymphocytes. When too much fluid is not drained and accumulates in an effected area due to the lymphatic system being impaired, lymphedema is the result.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Before treatment, make sure you see a specialist. A specialist will prescribe compression garments such as sleeves and stockings. Elevate the swollen limb to help drain the fluid away from the affected area. Avoid pressure to the armpit or groin and when resting the affected limb, make sure to rest it above the heart and on a comfortable surface. A specialist can also suggest very mild exercises to help reduce swelling as well as proper diet, skin care and draining of the fluid.
SHOE RECOMMENDATIONS: Always consult with a health professional before shopping for shoes if you suffer from lymphedema.
